Split Trail (2010)
Split Trail is what you would call a free roaming running game. It takes inspiration from Mirror’s Edge and developed in the Unreal 3 Engine during a ten week project time at the University of Skövde. I was proclaimed as main writer and my responsibilities consisted of writing backstory for all the characters and developing the game world as a whole. I also wrote the script that needed to be modified for the different paths the player could take in the game. One other main responsibility involved the voice acting aspect, I directed all the voice actors and dialog to fit in the game and convey the feeling and emotion that the game was aiming for.
Story
The player steps into the shoes of a PDO (Private Detective Operative) in a fictional world of future America. The game starts with the player finding out that the detective’s wife has been kidnapped and a man is seen running from the detective’s house, leading to the player following in hot pursuit. The chase starts on the rooftops over the futuristic city. The story throws the player through a dangerous city filled with obstacles and interesting locations. The narrative unfolds with the help of cut scenes and information packages from the detective’s past that gives more contexts to the story and the world.
The story takes inspiration from psychological thrillers in different aspects and gives the player visions and insights into the detective’s mind as they try to understand the world from his psyche.
This game also sparked a novel that was meant as a prequel and explained more about the character and the world.
Below is the trailer for the game that shows the gameplay and the game world.
